Noida: Police fails to protect rape victim's identity

A major blunder was made by the police in the Noida rape case after they gave away the personal details of a 17-year-old rape victim in a live press conference.

A major blunder was made by the police in the Noida rape case after they gave away the personal details of a 17-year-old rape victim in a live press conference.


It is in clear violation of the law that prohibits the disclosure of such information in order to protect the victim's identity.
The Superintendent of Police of Noida made the comment during a press conference on Sunday. He later defended himself and claimed that he didn't reveal the identity of the class tenth rape victim and instead blamed the mistake on a lower rank officer.
The case was related to the alleged gangrape of a 17-year-old in a moving car on Friday night.
Meanwhile, the fifth accused in the case, Neeraj, was arrested on Monday. earlier, the police had arrested four accused - Himanshu Sharma, Rahul Arya, Saurabh and Sunil.
The victim allegedly knew one of the accused. She had gone to his birthday party on Friday evening, where the other three were also present. On their way back from the party, the four men got together and allegedly raped her.
"Investigations revealed that the victim was known to accused. On Friday evening, the girl had gone with them for birthday celebration of one of the accused. There she was given a sedative laced drink," said Anant Dev, Superintendent of Police.
"Thereafter, she was taken in car and gangraped by the five accused," he said. Earlier, the girl had claimed that she was dragged into the vehicle as she was waiting for her father at a bus stop last night and gangraped.
"Though initially there was suspicion that the accused had made her MMS and had threatened to post it on the net if she goes to police but this could not be verified. The accused were being questioned in detail," said Dev. (With additional information from PTI)
