The city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh has found itself in the spotlight in the past few weeks, following the inauguration of the new airport and the revamped railway station by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30.
In another event that could further uplift the city's image, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has brought a plot in the city to construct a house, a Hindustan Times report said.
The 81-year-old actor has purchased a plot of land to construct a house in "The Saraya", a 7-star mixed-use enclave in the city spread over 51 acres by The House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL), a Mumbai-based developer.
"I am looking forward to embark on this journey with The House of Abhinandan Lodha for The Sarayu in Ayodhya, a city that holds a special place in my heart. The timeless spirituality and cultural richness of Ayodhya have forged an emotional connection that transcends geographical boundaries".
"This is a start of a heartfelt journey into the soul of Ayodhya, where tradition and modernity seamlessly co-exist, creating an emotional tapestry that resonates with me deeply. I am looking forward to building my home in the global spiritual capital," Bachchan said.
While HoABL declined to comment on the size and value of the deal due to client confidentiality, real estate industry sources said that the plot was valued at Rs 14.5 crore and measured around 10,000 square feet.
"His investment in our Ayodhya project reflects confidence in the city’s economic potential and deep appreciation for its spiritual heritage," HoABL Chairman Abhinandan Lodha said in a statement.
The actor's investment is in the plotted development of the location, which also has a five-star palace hotel in partnership with Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2028.
Ayodhya is also a four-hour drive, on National Highway 330, from Bachchan's birthplace of Prayagraj. The city is likely to find itself in the news further this week as the inauguration of the Ram Mandir, on January 22, gets closer.
