The ongoing Monsoon Session has seen arch nemeses BJP and Congress file privilege motions against Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi respectively on the issue of Rafale deal.

While the BJP has alleged that Rahul ‘misled’ the Parliament by levelling ‘false accusations’ on PM Modi and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman; the Congress has said Sitharaman’s statement in Parliament that the ‘secrecy pact’ between the governments of India and France is preventing the Centre from revealing details of the Rafale deal are “totally wrong”.

Speaker of Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan is due to hear these motions in session today. Hence, it is essential that we know what a privilege motion is and what are its consequences.
