Punjab Polls 2022 | 25% of candidates in fray face criminal cases: Report
Twenty-five percent of 1,276 candidates contesting the Punjab assembly elections have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to a report prepared by the Punjab Election Watch. PEW, an affiliate of the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), analysed the affidavits of 1,276 candidates out of the total 1,304 in the fray for the February 20 elections.
PEW said it could not analyse the affidavits of 28 candidates as they were either badly scanned or complete details were not uploaded on the website of the Election Commission of India. As far as educational qualifications of candidates go, more than half of them have studied up to Class 12, the report said.
It was released by PEW state coordinator Jaskirat Singh. According to the report, the average of assets owned by the candidates contesting the assembly polls is Rs 4.31 crore. The corresponding figure for the 2017 assembly elections was Rs 3.49 crore.

Providing 300 units of free electricity to every household, revising MSP of rice, wheat and sugarcane, and making Gairsain the permanent capital of Uttarakhand are among the promises made by the AAP in its manifesto released on Friday. Releasing the manifesto titled 'Vachan Patra' (document of pledges) in Uttarkashi, the Aam Aadmi Party's chief ministerial candidate Ajay Kothiyal signed an affidavit promising to work honestly if elected.
He asked people to take legal action against the party if a single promise made in the manifesto is not fulfilled. Besides vowing to get Uttarakhand rid of corruption, it also pledged to double the state's budget in five years, a separate budget for women's welfare, carve out six new districts of Kashipur, Roorkee, Kotdwar, Didihat, Ranikhet and Yamunotri and pay Rs 1,000 each month to women above 18 years.

Goa polls 2022: Helipad built for PM in 24 hours, but no bus stop near site for 20 years, says Kejriwal
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday claimed that the Goa government had built a helipad for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit within 24 hours, but a bus stop next to the site had not come up in 20 years. Addressing a press conference in Panaji, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP-led state government lacked the intent for development.
The state Assembly polls, scheduled to be held on February 14, was not an ordinary election, it was Goa's chance to change. This election can change the present and future of Goa, he said. Claiming that the state government lacks the intent for development, Kejriwal said when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to Goa on Thursday, a brand-new helipad was built for him within 24 hours.

Previous govt in UP casteists, Modi worked for welfare of all, says Amit Shah
Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah on Friday termed the governments formed before the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh as "casteist" and claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi worked for the welfare of all castes. At an election meeting in Aonla of Bareilly district, Shah said that as BJP president in 2017 he had promised his party would end "gundaa raj' in Uttar Pradesh.
The Yogi Adityanath government has kept the promise, he claimed. "Mafias are not visible in Uttar Pradesh. Azam Khan, Atiq Ahmed and Mukhtar Ansari are in jail." Training his guns at the opposition parties, Shah said, "The previous governments of Uttar Pradesh were casteists. When the SP (Samajwadi Party) came (to power), work was done for one caste. When the BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) was in power, then work was done for the other caste. Modi Ji did development for all and worked for all castes with the 'sabka saath, sabka vishvaas' (mantra)."
"When the SP or BSP was in power mafia was ruling the roost in the state. Narendra Modi Ji and Yogi Ji have sent them to jail," he added.

The oldest person in the fray is 94 years old and he is contesting from the Lambi Assembly constituency in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S Karuna Raju said on February 10.
There are 2,14,99,804 registered voters in the state and 24,740 polling stations spread across 14,684 locations.

UP Assembly elections 2022: Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar register lowest voter turnout in first phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections
Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar were two districts with the lowest voter turnout in the first phase of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh that concluded on February 10, with Noida seat having just 50.1 per cent electors at polls.
The state's average voter turnout was recorded at 60.17 per cent, while the average in Ghaziabad stood at 54.77 per cent and in Gautam Buddh Nagar at 56.73 per cent, the Election Commission (EC) said.

There are five assembly seats in Ghaziabad, which has around 29 lakh registered voters. The district also has the partial assembly seat of Dhaulana, which technically falls in the Hapur district.
The elections were held in 58 assembly constituencies spanning 11 districts in western part of the state on February 10, with over 2.28 crore registered voters, of which only 60.17 per cent turned up at poll booths, according to the EC.
