K Chandrashekar Rao-led Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on December 11 retained power in India’s newest state with a thumping majority, in the state assembly election.
TRS won 88 out of the 119 seats in the Legislative Assembly. The Congress-led alliance, called the ‘Prajakutami’, won 21 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win one seat. Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won seven seats.
Here’s a look at the financial assets, criminal cases, educational qualifications of the newly elected Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Telangana, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
The ADR analysis is based on the self-sworn election affidavits filed by the MLAs.
Crorepati legislators
Out of the 119 MLAs elected to the assembly, 106 MLAs (89 percent) are crorepatis. In 2014, 83 (70 percent) of the elected MLAs were crorepatis.
Out of 88 elected members from the TRS, 83 are crorepatis.
As many as 14 out of Congress’ 19 MLAs and five out of the seven AIMIM MLAs are crorepatis. Out of two Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislators, one is a crorepati. BJP's lone MLA is also a crorepati.
The average assets per MLA in Telangana rose to Rs 15.71 crore from what was Rs 7.70 crore in 2014.
Criminal cases
In the new Assembly, a total of 73 (61 percent) MLAs have declared criminal cases pending against them. The number has risen from what was 67 (56 percent) in 2014.
Out of these 73 MLAs, 50 belong to TRS, 14 belong to the Congress, and six belong to AIMIM. Both the winning TDP MLAs and the lone BJP MLA have criminal cases pending against them.
Education
As many as 74 out of the 119 MLAs have an educational qualification equivalent to a graduate or above. Around 45 MLAs declared their qualification to be 12th pass or below.
Age
Out of 119 MLAs, five are aged under the 40 and 36 MLAs are between 41 and 50 years of age. Around 50 MLAs are aged between 51-60 years, 26 fall in the 61-70 age group and two are 70 years old or more.
Gender representation
With six women elected to the state assembly this time, only five percent of elected legislators are women.
