Struggling to link PAN and Aadhaar due to mismatched details? Here's how to correct it
Linking your PAN to Aadhaar is now a compliance standard for all Indian taxpayers. However, the process remains in limbo if there is a name or date of birth mismatch in personal details. If the link process has not gone through due to a mismatch, do not panic. You may fix the issue by correcting the same and undertaking the process from the official websites.
PAN-Aadhaar linkage is compulsory even if the match is not found The government of India has made it mandatory to link your PAN with Aadhaar for seamless financial transactions and tax filing. However, mismatches in details like name, date of birth, or gender can prevent successful linking. This article explains how to identify the error, correct your details in either Aadhaar or PAN, and finally complete the linking to avoid penalties or deactivation of your PAN.
Step 1: Identify the difference between PAN and Aadhaar details Start by matching the individual details of both the documents—name in full, date of birth, and gender. Minor discrepancy like initial name vs. full name or wrong birth year makes the linking ineligible. You can login to the Income Tax e-filing portal and try to link PAN with Aadhaar. If there is a mismatch, the web page will display the reason for failure.
Step 2: Correct information in your Aadhaar card by UIDAI If the error is in your Aadhaar card, then you can correct a change in your information by going to the UIDAI website: https://uidai.gov.in. For name, address, or gender changes, utilize the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP). For date of birth updating, you may need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with supporting documents. After updating, wait for the confirmation through SMS and download the updated Aadhaar.
Step 3: Update PAN details through NSDL or UTIITSL If the mismatch lies in your PAN card, visit https://www.tin-nsdl.com or https://www.pan.utiitsl.com. Choose ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN’ and update your name, date of birth, or gender as required. Submit necessary documents like Aadhaar copy, passport, or birth certificate. You’ll receive a new PAN card after verification. Ensure the updated details now match with Aadhaar.
Step 4: Connect PAN and Aadhaar after matching data After rectification and validation of errors, visit Income Tax website https://incometax.gov.in. Login with your PAN and password, choose 'Link Aadhaar' under 'Profile', enter your Aadhaar number, and request to process the same. You will be asked for an OTP on your Aadhaar registered mobile number. Upon verification, linking will be done successfully.
Rectify mismatch now to avoid penalties If your Aadhaar and PAN are not connected due to mismatch, the same should be linked at the earliest. Failing to do so can lead to PAN getting deactivated and penalty. By realizing the error and getting your documents adjusted accordingly, you can link without any issue. Your government records being in sync is not only a must—it's important for hassle-free tax filing and verification of identity.
