Opinion | Bickering over the GDP back series is much ado about nothing

A nuanced look at the back series GDP data suggests that both Congress and BJP have their successes and failures.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) set the cat among the pigeons with the release of back-series GDP data. It has set off a political battle as the government and opposition Indian National Congress squabble over who is the better economic manager of the country. But a more nuanced look shows that both parties had their shares of successes and failures. In any case, there is no significant difference between the old and new series. The Congress fired off a tweet claiming how its united progressive alliance (UPA) government delivered the only instance of double-digit annual growth in modern Indian history.
There is nothing wrong in what the Congress has said as the data released by the government agency clearly shows. The government immediately went on damage control with various ministries criticising the report and saying the estimates are not official and meant only to facilitate a decision on the appropriate approach.

The only thing that the data exemplifies, once again, is that the government of the day is extremely touchy over criticism. A comment by ex-finance minister P Chidambaram of Congress vindicating UPA’s performance was met with a long blog by a recuperating Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.

Jaitley said global factors were responsible in the pre-2008 era, and after the global financial meltdown the UPA government compromised fiscal discipline and advised the banking system to go in for reckless lending, notwithstanding the fact that it would eventually put the banks at a risk.
