Nara Lokesh 2.0 holds the promise of a blockbuster

TDP is in the midst of its three-day Mahanadu at Kadapa, the home ground of its arch-rival Jagan Reddy. Beyond the symbolism of holding its meeting there, the party is expected to announce a more substantive change, the appointment of Nara Lokesh as working president. Nara Lokesh's expected rise to working president of the TDP is more than just a job upgrade. It signals that the next generation is stepping up, but is not entirely in charge.

On a warm day in October 2015, Nara Lokesh, dressed in white, climbed the dais at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) headquarters. Cameras took pictures, and applause followed. At that moment, he was named General Secretary of the TDP. Critics rolled their eyes and whispered, "Just another dynast." Back then, he focused more on boardroom tasks than political battles. Few imagined that a decade later, he would be approaching a vital moment at the party’s grand Mahanadu, May 27-29, 2025, in Kadapa, poised to become the its working president.

Lokesh today is not seen as just a privileged heir. His political change is apparent, with the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance winning the 2024 Assembly elections and Lokesh securing a decisive victory in Mangalagiri. His expected rise to working president of the TDP is more than just a job upgrade. It signals that the next generation is stepping up, but is not entirely in charge.

A post to cement reality

Party insiders believe Lokesh's promotion to "working president" or "executive president" is almost guaranteed. The official announcement is expected at the end of the Mahanadu event. A senior party leader said, “Lokesh is already in charge. He is the unofficial number two. This just makes his role official.”
