How much regulation is desirable in the transportation space

In last 50 years not much has been done either by centre or by state governments to develop public transportation system.

I keep debating in my mind whether there should be regulation in the taxi space or not? Being a double edged sword, there are benefits of regulations but there are serious issues, if the industry is over regulated.

The latest Maharashtra draft rules are well thought with significant efforts made to make it all inclusive. The transportation sector falls in the concurrent list of the constitution, there is central Motor Vehicle Act 1988 alongside each state has its own laws and rules.

In last 50 years not much has been done either by centre or by state governments to develop public transportation system.

The entry of Meru in 2007, followed by entry of Ola and Uber in 2010 onwards, to a large extent has solved the problem of state transports departments to provide good quality public transportation system.
