Karnataka is planning to introduce Domestic Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, which aims to extend social security coverage, ensure minimum wage protection, and provide welfare benefits to domestic workers in urban areas, sources told Moneycontrol.

The draft bill proposes a rights-based contributory framework under which every domestic worker (including maids, cooks, drivers, nannies, and others), employer, and service provider must be mandatorily registered. It also calls for the creation of a Karnataka State Domestic Workers Social Security and Welfare Board to monitor implementation, frame welfare schemes, and oversee grievance redressal.

The Board will be a tripartite body with equal representation from state government officials, domestic workers and their unions, employers, service providers (including platforms), and representatives of resident welfare associations.
