HC reserves judgment on Abbas Ansari's plea for stay on conviction
The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday reserved its judgment on a petition filed by Abbas Ansari challenging the order of an MP-MLA court at Mau that had rejected his application for a stay on his conviction in a 2022 hate speech case.
Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was disqualified in June this year as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Mau seat, after he was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA court), Mau on May 31, 2025.
2 teachers die in flash flood in J-K's Ramban
Two government teachers lost their lives after being caught in a flash flood in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.
Jagdev Singh, 37, and Sanjay Kumar, 39, residents of Ghordi village of Ramnagar in Udhampur, were on a motorcycle when they were swept away by the strong current of a mountain stream near Nathatop on Tuesday, they said.
Their bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, nearly 300 metres downstream from the link road where they are believed to have been swept away, officials said. - PTI

Workers at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant in northeast Japan were evacuated Wednesday after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake off Russia's far east triggered tsunami warnings around the Pacific.
"We have evacuated all workers and employees" at the Fukushima Daiichi plant -- which went into meltdown after being hit by a tsunami in 2011 -- a spokeswoman for plant operator TEPCO told AFP, adding that "no abnormality" had been observed at the site.
Japan upgrades tsunami warning to 3 metres
Japan's weather agency upgraded its tsunami warning Wednesday after a magnitude-8.7 earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, saying waves of up to three metres (9.8 feet) were expected.
