Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday promised to take strict action against the miscreants who attacked the police personnel during the violent clashes in Nagpur this week.
During the assembly session, Fadnavis termed the attack on police a planned “conspiracy" and said, “We will dig them out from their graves, but won’t spare those who attacked police in Nagpur." Fadnavis also highlighted the role of rumors in escalating violence saying that the violence erupted due to a rumor about a religious symbol on the symbolic grave sheet.
An on-duty female police officer was allegedly molested by a man during Maharashtra’s Nagpur violence, a First Information Report registered in this regard stated on Wednesday.
The Nagpur violence accused, the FIR said, also made obscene gestures and misbehaved with some other women, including police personnel, during the incident, which reportedly began around 4pm on March 17 and continued until approximately 11.30pm, The Indian Express reported.
The FIR was registered two days after violence broke out in several parts of Nagpur amid a row over the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Aurangabad. The riots spread due to rumours of a right-wing group burning the Quran, the holy book of the Muslim community.
Fadnavis further highlighted how a mob pelted stones at the cops. “A crowd of around 80 people was involved in stone-pelting. A police officer was attacked with an axe and three deputy commissioners were assaulted. Certain houses were deliberately targeted and one DCP was attacked with an axe," he said.
