A disturbing case of alleged molestation has surfaced at a government-run health center in Ilambazar, Birbhum district in West Bengal. On Saturday night, a nurse on duty was reportedly molested by a male patient while she was administering saline in the emergency department. The patient, who was receiving treatment at the center, allegedly touched the nurse inappropriately in front of his family members, as per an NDTV report.
The nurse stated how the patient misbehaved and touched her inappropriately while she was simply following the doctor's orders. She also reported being verbally abused by the patient.
"The male patient misbehaved with me and touched me inappropriately in my private parts while I was simply following the doctor's instructions. He also hurled verbal abuses at me," the nurse recounted, detailing her distressing experience, as cited in the report.
"Such incidents happen because of a lack of security. Otherwise, how could a patient dare to act in this way towards someone on duty, especially in the presence of his family members who did nothing to stop him," she added.
The incident has heightened tensions at the health center and comes at a time when the state government and police are already under intense scrutiny for their handling of the August 9 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Following a complaint by the nurse, the hospital authorities quickly informed the police, resulting in the arrest of the accused.
