Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called for an immediate, impartial and transparent probe into the death of journalist Rajiv Pratap Singh, whose body was found in Uttarkashi district’s Joshiada lake on September 28, ten days after he went missing.

“The disappearance and subsequent death of young Uttarakhand journalist Rajiv Pratap Singh is not only tragic but horrifying,” Gandhi posted in Hindi on X on Tuesday. “I express my condolences to the bereaved family and stand with them during this difficult time.”

Singh, who had been missing since the night of September 18, was last traced near the Bhagirathi River, where his car was discovered the following day. His body was eventually recovered from the lake in Uttarkashi, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death.

Rahul Gandhi alleged that under BJP rule, “honest journalism today lives in the shadow of fear and insecurity.” He further said, “Those who write the truth, speak out for the public, and question the government are being silenced through threats and violence.”

“The entire incident involving Rajiv Singh points to such a conspiracy,” the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha remarked, insisting that justice must be delivered without delay. “There should be an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into Rajiv Singh's death, and the victim's family should receive justice without delay.”
