The receding monsoon is wreaking havoc in the hill state of Uttarakhand. Heavy rains lashed parts of Dehradun and nearby areas since last night.
According to the latest reports, a cloudburst occurred early this morning at the iconic tourist spot of Sahastradhara. As a result, the Tamsa River has risen above the danger mark.
A video posted by news agency ANI shows the famous Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple completely submerged due to flooding.
Speaking to ANI, temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi said, "The river started flowing heavily around 5 a.m., and the entire temple premises were submerged. Such a situation has not occurred in a very long time. Losses have been reported in various places. People should avoid going near rivers at this time. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is safe, and no human casualties have been reported so far."
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for heavy showers at isolated places in Dehradun, Chamoli, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, and Nainital districts today. Other parts of Uttarakhand are also likely to experience intense rainfall.
The weather in the state has once again turned hostile in recent days. In the Karli Gaad area of Sahastradhara, heavy rains triggered a cloudburst around 11:30 p.m., spreading panic among residents. The incident damaged two to three large hotels and destroyed about seven to eight shops in the local market.
Around 100 people were trapped at the spot, but villagers managed to rescue them on their own. Following reports of the cloudburst, the district administration launched relief and rescue operations and moved nearby residents to safer locations during the night.
District Magistrate Savin Bansal took charge of the situation, coordinating with all departments and dispatching rescue teams to the site. The SDRF, NDRF, and Public Works Department began operations overnight. Two people have reportedly gone missing in the incident.
After this disaster in Dehradun, the district administration has been placed on alert, and departments linked to the IRS (Incident Response System) have been activated. Since early this morning, Dehradun has witnessed heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
