India-Pakistan Ceasefire News: US President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that his administration helped broker an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which he thinks would be "a permanent one."
Talking to reporters, Trump said, "...On Saturday, my administration helped broker an immediate ceasefire, I think a permanent one between India and Pakistan - the countries having a lot of nuclear weapons..."
Explaining how the decision to ceasefire was arrived upon, he informed, "...I'm very proud to let you know that the leadership of Indian and Pakistan was unwavering and powerful, but unwavering in both cases - they really were from the standpoint of having the strength and the wisdom and fortitude to fully know and to understand the gravity of the situation."
Talking about how he used trade tariffs to broker the deal between the two countries, he opined, "And we helped a lot, and we also helped with trade. I said. Come on, we're going to do a lot of trade with you guys. Let's stop it, let's stop it. If you stop it, we're doing trade. If you don't stop it, we're not going to do any trade. People have never really used trade the way I used it. By that, I can tell you, and all of a sudden they said. I think we're gonna stop, and they have."
On how he feared the two nations could have sparked a nuclear conflict, the US President said, "We stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war. Millions of people could have been killed. I also want to thank VP JD Vance and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, for their work."
Talking about how US-India trade talks are progressing post the ceasefire announcement, he added, "We're going to do a lot of trade with Pakistan. We're going to do a lot of trade with India. We're negotiating with India right now. We're going to be soon negotiated with Pakistan."
Earlier on Sunday, Trump had praised the "strong and unwaveringly powerful" leadership of India and Pakistan for reaching a "ceasefire" and offered to work with them for a "solution" on the Kashmir issue.
However, India has always maintained that the Kashmir issue is a bilateral matter and there is no space for any third party intervention. India asserts that the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh are and always will be integral and inalienable parts of it.
"I will work with you both to see if, after a 'thousand years,' a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
