In a tragic event, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader was fatally shot on Sunday by unidentified attackers near the Chheharta Sahib Gurudwara in Punjab's Amritsar.
The deceased, Harjinder Singh, a councillor from Jandiala Guru in the district, was fatally shot near Chheharta Sahib Gurudwara, with two bullets fired into his head.
According to Punjab Police, the attackers, who arrived on a bike, fired two bullets at Singh’s head. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Police have identified the accused and registered an FIR against them.
The victim’s brother and brother-in-law claimed that the assailants were the same individuals who had previously opened fire at Singh’s residence and had issued threats against him.
The councillor came to Chheharta in Amritsar to attend an event, and as soon as he stepped outside, masked men on a bike opened fire on him.
Punjab Police ADCP Harpal Singh Randhawa told PTI that, “While Harjinder Singh was on his way, a motorcycle carrying three to four individuals approached him and opened fire. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital."
“According to his brother and brother-in-law, the attackers were the same individuals who had previously opened fire at his residence and issued threats to him," he added.
Senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia condemned the murder and blamed the deteriorating law and order situation under the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government.
Majithia shared CCTV footage from the earlier attack on Singh’s house and questioned why no action was taken despite complaints reaching the Director General of Police.
“The law and order situation in Punjab has deteriorated from bad to worse. Harjinder Singh, a current councilor of the Shiromani Akali Dal from Jandiala Guru in Sri Amritsar Sahib district, was shot dead today. A few days ago, shots were fired at the house of Councilor Harjinder Singh," he said in a post on X
Majithia called on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to “wake up from your sleep and restore law and order,” holding him responsible for the councillor’s death.
