Starmer's India Visit Live: 'This is really big opportunity, both for UK and India,' says UK PM on trade deal

Responding to a media query on how the UK-India trade deal could help counter US tariffs for both (UK and India) countries, UK PM Keir Starmer said, "I think there's huge optimism about the trade deal... There was optimism in July at Chequers when we hosted Prime Minister Modi and signed the deal. There's just as much optimism here, with businesses already taking advantage of the new spirit brought about by the trade deal. The trade deal is yet to be fully implemented, which we're going to do quickly, but it has already opened up new opportunities and confidence. Both Prime Minister Modi and I recognise that in a world which is increasingly uncertain in trade and the economy, it is significant that two important and great democracies, the UK and India, have signed this agreement, providing stability and certainty. That stability is what creates opportunities, some of which we've already harnessed in the last 48 hours while we've been here, 10,600 jobs created through opportunities just during this delegation’s visit."

He added, "So, this is a really big opportunity, both for the UK and for India. And in a sense, that’s not just what I am saying or what the Prime Minister is saying, it’s what businesses are saying, it’s what the discussions are showing, it’s what cultural institutions are saying, and it’s what universities are saying. They see this as deeply significant in an uncertain world, and they are right about that."

I've seen it happening all around in the last two days, in corners of rooms, around tables over food or drink, and discussions going on. It's been an incredible buzz on our side on the delegation. We felt this on the plane on the way over. There was incredible energy, and it's been a real buzz around these meetings. I think it is the continuation of what we started in Chequers. I've always seen this as a sort of two-part exercise. We had the FTA itself, we had an excellent meeting in Chequers.
