Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly received an invitation from US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to participate in the Gaza peace summit in Egypt's Sharm-el Sheikh on Monday, October 13, a Indian Express report said on Sunday.
The invitation, described as last-minute, was extended to the Prime Minister on Saturday, according to the report. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has not yet confirmed whether Modi will attend the summit, which aims to address the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.
An official statement from the Egyptian Presidency outlined that the summit will take place on Monday afternoon under the joint chairmanship of Trump and Sisi, with the participation of leaders from over 20 countries.
"The summit seeks to end the war in the Gaza Strip, bolster efforts for regional peace and stability, and open a new chapter for security in the Middle East," the statement said. It added that the event reflects President Trump's vision for peace and his "relentless quest to end conflicts globally."
According to The Indian Express, if Prime Minister Modi confirms his participation, the summit would provide him an opportunity to meet President Trump and strengthen India's engagement in the Middle East. Attendance could also signal India's support for the Palestinian cause, promote regional peace, and further bilateral relations with Egypt.
In a related development, US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor visited New Delhi on Saturday, his first outreach amid recent strains in India-US relations, including higher tariffs and changes to H-1B visa fees. Gor, who will be in India from October 9 to 14, met with Prime Minister Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. During his Senate confirmation hearings last month, Gor had emphasised India as a "strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond," according to The Indian Express.
