The Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India has issued a fact check regarding a false letter circulated on social media purportedly written by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command.
Issuing the fact check on X (formerly known as Twitter), PIB wrote that the letter is being spread by social media accounts operating in Pakistani and their agenda is to spread false propaganda and misinformation.
It also advised Indians to avoid sharing such unverified information and to only rely on official sources from the Government of India for accurate information.
PIB wrote: "A fake letter purportedly addressed by Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh, to General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command is being shared on social media. It is being spread by Pakistani accounts as False Propaganda aimed at spreading misinformation. Avoid sharing unverified information and rely only on official sources from the Government of India for accurate information."
Recently, the government also issued warning against fake social media accounts impersonating distinguished Indian Armed Force officers — Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofia Qureshi, stating that such fraudulent social media handles have gained traction amid heightened public interest following India's launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7.
Earlier on Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Pakistan's nuclear weapons should be brought under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as they are not safe in such a rogue nation. "The whole world has seen how irresponsibly Pakistan has given nuclear threats to India several times," he said during his interaction with troops.
"Today, from the land of Srinagar, I want to raise this question before the whole world: are nuclear weapons safe in the hands of such an irresponsible and rogue nation?" Singh asked.
"I believe that Pakistan's nuclear weapons should be taken under the supervision of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)," he added.
The defence minister's comments came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India would not tolerate "nuclear blackmail" by Pakistan and would punish cross-border terrorism strongly.
India carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) in the early hours on May 7 following which Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10.
The Pakistani actions were strongly responded to by the Indian side. The Indian military targeted eight Pakistani air bases with missiles and other long-range weapons on May 10 in retaliation for Pakistan's attempts to strike 26 military facilities.
The hostilities ended with an understanding on stopping the military actions following talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations of both sides on the afternoon of May 10.
