In the sweltering heat of the Indian summer of 2013, as the world watched Barack Obama's oath-taking, I traversed the landscapes of Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand, seeking hope within the walls of government schools. Despite a commendable 96 percent enrollment rate at the primary level, the alarmingly poor learning outcomes echoed a disheartening discord in the melody of educational progress in India.

The unsolved problem

The question loomed large – was the education we were imparting to our children relevant for tomorrow's world? The "factory model of education", a relic from the Industrial Revolution, seemed ill-suited for a world transitioning into a digital economy marked by innovation and divergent thinking. The need to revisit the relevance of this kind of education was palpable and urgent.

Our journey at the Sampark Design Thinking Research Centre led to critical insights. Despite increased budget allocations, learning outcomes had declined, highlighting the need for frugal and innovative ideas. The focus shifted to the 'learning zone' – the interface of the teacher and the child. The need for resource-light, easy-to-execute ideas became evident, with a clear understanding that Ed-Tech, while promising, could not be a stand-alone intervention.
