Mumbai’s air quality has shown improvement since November 26, supported by multiple pollution-control measures across the city and its suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Monday.
According to officials, show-cause notices have been issued to 482 construction sites for violating pollution norms, and 264 of them have been served ‘stop-work’ notices. “The show-cause notices have been issued to 482 construction sites across Mumbai for allegedly violating air pollution control guidelines and contributing to deteriorating air quality,” civic officials said.
The BMC also clarified that Graded Response Action Plan Stage-4 (GRAP-4) is not in effect in Mumbai at present, though authorities have ordered intensified monitoring of pollution sources.
Municipal commissioner and BMC administrator Bhushan Gagrani has directed departments to continue strict action against private construction firms as well as government and non-government projects that violate the civic body’s 28-point dust and pollution-mitigation guidelines, the release noted.
The civic body said improving wind speed — now 10–18 kmph, compared to 3–4 kmph before November 28 — along with enforcement measures such as notices to errant construction sites, misting, water sprinkling, road washing, awareness drives, and the shift to cleaner fuels by bakeries and crematoria, has contributed to better AQI levels over the past 48 hours.
To tighten enforcement, the BMC has deployed 94 ward-level flying squads to monitor implementation of mitigation measures. These teams are inspecting private sites as well as stretches of road and metro projects, issuing stop-work notices wherever violations are found. The squads are also checking sensor-based AQI monitoring devices at construction sites, the release added.
Mumbai’s GRAP-4 framework primarily covers construction activities, small industrial units, and related operations.
