The Madhya Pradesh government has officially renamed Ujjain’s Vikram University as Samrat Vikramaditya University to emphasize its connection with the legendary Emperor Vikramaditya.
Announcing the decision at the university’s 29th convocation ceremony on Sunday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the change was made to ensure clarity about the institution’s namesake.
“We know our university is named after Vikramaditya. But for those who may not, I, with the permission of the governor and the consent of the higher education minister, announce that Vikram University will now be known as Samrat Vikramaditya University,” Yadav said.
During the event, Governor Mangubhai Patel, who is also the university’s chancellor, conferred an honorary D.Litt. degree on CM Yadav, who hails from Ujjain.
Highlighting Ujjain’s historical and cultural significance, the chief minister described it as one of India’s seven holiest cities and urged graduates to use their education to serve society and contribute to the nation.
“Vast opportunities await you. Researchers should strive to represent Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and India on the global stage,” Yadav said.
Governor Patel praised Ujjain’s rich legacy in education, religion, literature, culture, science, and commerce. He recalled how Lord Krishna studied in Ujjain at Acharya Sandipani’s Gurukul by the Shipra River, reinforcing the city’s historic role in education.
At the convocation, 70 students received degrees, 99 students were awarded medals, and two researchers were conferred with D.Litt. degrees.
