Parliament Session 2025 Live Updates: Both Houses adjourned till tomorrow; Murmu accepts Dhankhar's resignation
Parliament Session 2025 Live Updates: The second day of the Parliament Monsoon Session 2025 is set to begin at 11 am today, after a tumultuous opening marked by heated protests, adjournments, and high political drama.
The opposition remains firm on its demand for an immediate discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, a major military offensive that continues to dominate the national discourse.
On Monday, the session opened to stormy scenes as members of the INDIA bloc disrupted both Houses, calling for a debate on what they called a "historic" and controversial operation.
The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned multiple times as opposition members raised slogans, entered the Well of the House, and demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a rare move, both Houses received notices for the removal of Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma, after burnt wads of cash were discovered at his residence earlier this year. A total of 63 Rajya Sabha MPs and 152 Lok Sabha MPs, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, signed the motion. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed receipt of the notice and initiated the removal process under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. Speaker Om Birla received the parallel motion in the Lower House. A joint committee of inquiry is likely to be formed soon.
Dhankhar later submitted his resignation as Vice President of India, citing health concerns. His resignation comes just a day after he chaired the Upper House and addressed the issue of judicial impeachment at length.
Despite the chaos, the Rajya Sabha managed to pass the Bills of Lading Bill, 2025, aimed at modernising the legal framework for shipping documents. The Lok Sabha had already cleared the bill earlier in March.
In an indication that the standoff may continue, the INDIA bloc has announced that it will raise the issue of Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive on Tuesday, amid allegations of targeted voter deletions. A protest is planned at the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament at 10 am.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi, in his address to the nation before the session began, hailed Operation Sindoor as a landmark success and dubbed the session a “Vijay Utsav” (celebration of victory). He also highlighted India’s growing international stature, citing the national flag’s unfurling at the International Space Station.
The government indicated readiness for a full-fledged debate on Operation Sindoor. Health Minister J.P. Nadda told the Rajya Sabha, “Every aspect of Operation Sindoor will be presented before the country and the world.” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed similar sentiments in the Lok Sabha, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged the opposition to allow the House to function.
However, repeated opposition demands for an immediate debate led to three adjournments in the Lok Sabha before the House was finally adjourned for the day.
Sources said the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Lok Sabha, chaired by Speaker Om Birla, has allocated 16 hours for a special discussion on Operation Sindoor, likely to be scheduled for next week.
With both Houses resuming today and key issues, from terrorism to judicial integrity, on the agenda, the Monsoon Session promises to be a politically charged one. The session is scheduled to run until August 21, with a break from August 12 to 17 for Independence Day celebrations.
