Kolkata Doctor Rape Case LIVE: SC orders removal of all pictures, videos of victim doctor
The Kolkata Police have revealed disturbing details in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, visited two brothels in the city's red-light area, Sonagachi, on the night of the crime, August 8. After consuming alcohol, Roy returned to the hospital after midnight, where CCTV footage captured him entering and leaving the seminar hall where the doctor was later found dead.
This horrific incident has ignited nationwide protests, particularly in Kolkata. Demonstrators, including IT professionals, have flooded the streets of Sector V in Salt Lake, demanding justice with chants of "Justice for RG Kar" and "Justice for our sister."
The West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe financial irregularities at the hospital, while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the rape-murder investigation. The CBI is questioning Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector, who allegedly had close ties with the accused, Roy.
Nationwide protests have erupted, including demonstrations by IT professionals and football fans in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim. The Supreme Court has ordered increased security at RG Kar Medical College and directed the formation of a national task force to ensure doctors' safety across the country. Despite the ongoing protests, junior doctors remain on strike, severely affecting healthcare services in West Bengal.
