Bike Taxi Welfare Association Bengaluru has written to Karnataka transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, calling out what it describes as a "double standard" in the treatment of gig workers.
The association questioned why two-wheelers with white number plates are permitted for delivery services, while the same vehicles used for passenger transport by bike taxi riders invite penalties.
“Both are gig economy jobs governed by the same Motor Vehicles Act. We’re ready to follow the rules- so why the distinction?” the letter said.

Stating they’re not against delivery workers, the association said unclear policies have left them feeling excluded. “We only ask that our rights be protected equally, with fairness and compassion.”
The letter stated that 80 percent of bike taxi riders are Kannadigas. “This work belongs to the youth of this state who want to build something for themselves. It’s heartbreaking when our work is restricted, while delivery services using identical vehicles operate freely.”

The group argued that the inconsistency hurts livelihoods. “Why should a Kannadiga delivering people face penalties, while one delivering food on the same road is allowed? This sends a message that local youth are being sidelined due to arbitrary rules.”
Bike taxi riders also stressed their role in daily commuting needs. “We serve lakhs every day - students, working women, and others. We don’t ask for favours, only to be heard and included in policymaking.”
The association said riders earn Rs 30,000–Rs 35,000 a month, helping them support families, save for education, and stay employed. Many had returned to Karnataka after finding work as bike taxi riders.
“Most of us come from modest backgrounds across the state. This work gives us dignity, flexibility, and hope,” the letter said, urging the government to frame a fair and inclusive policy.
