The Enforcement Directorate on August 6 summoned Gulshan Ara Nazir, the mother of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in a money laundering case, news agency PTI reported quoting ED officials.

This is the second time she has been summoned by the ED. The central agency had earlier summoned the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief’s mother for questioning on July 14.

Gulshan Nazir, who is in her 70s, is reportedly being questioned in connection with a case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). After conducting raids on an alleged associate of Mehbooba Mufti, the central agency had recovered at least two diaries that contained details of purported payments made illegally from the former J&K CM’s discretionary fund. Lakhs of rupees were allegedly diverted to Nazir’s accounts among others.

Notably, Mehbooba Mufti herself was questioned by the ED in March 2021 in connection with another money laundering case. The PDP chief has dubbed the ED summons as witch hunts being conducted by the Centre to intimidate political opponents and those who raise their voices against the government.
