‘Difficult to find a problem’: Shashi Tharoor on bills to remove PM, CMs

On the face of it, it’s difficult to find a problem, obviously, if someone has done something wrong, they should not remain a minister. However, I don’t know if there’s any other motive behind the bill, since I haven’t examined it in detail, says Congress leader.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said he had not examined in detail the bills for removal of Prime Minister, Chief Ministers facing serious criminal charges.

“I haven’t studied the bill carefully enough. On the face of it, it’s difficult to find a problem, obviously, if someone has done something wrong, they should not remain a minister. However, I don’t know if there’s any other motive behind the bill, since I haven’t examined it in detail," he told ANI.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday introduced in the Lok Sabha contentious bills that propose that a sitting minister, chief minister or even the prime minister can lose their position within a month if they are arrested or detained for 30 days straight over an offence that carries a jail term of five years or more.

This led to a massive showdown by the opposition. Opposition MPs, including Asasduddin Owaisi, Manish Tewari, NK Premchandran, Dharmendra Yadav and KC Venugopal, opposed the bill, calling it “anti-constitutional".

Shah, however, proposed that the three bills be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation.
