IndiGo airlines on May 10 canceled all flights to Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Rajahmundry for May 11 due to Cyclone Asani. The domestic budget carrier has offered its customers alternate flights or a full refund in return.
IndiGo has canceled 23 flights to Visakhapatnam International Airport due to cyclone Asani till now. The airline has also asked its customers to check for delays due to heavy rains in Kolkata.
“We are working closely with the authorities of all airports that have been affected by Cyclone Asani and will restore flights as soon as possible,” a senior official from the airlines said.
Airport authorities at Visakhapatnam International also said that they are working with airlines to ensure safe operations and have advised airlines to keep flights on hold till Cyclone Asani subsidies.
In addition to this, Air India and Air Asia have also cancelled a few flights to Visakhapatnam airport. Around ten flights to Chennai airport have also been cancelled till now, according to news reports.
AirAsia has cancelled Delhi-Visakhapatnam and Bangalore-Visakhapatnam flights. Air India has also cancelled Mumbai-Raipur-Visakhapatnam and Delhi-Visakhapatnam flights.
Around 10 flights from Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Jaipur and Mumbai to Chennai Airport have also been cancelled so far, airport authorities in Chennai said.
With 'Asani' moving closer to the Andhra Pradesh coast, parts of the coastal region are experiencing gusty winds and rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 10 predicted rainfall and strong winds for three states, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.
"Cyclone Asani is very likely to move nearly northwestwards till May 10 night and reach West Central Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coast and adjoining Odisha coast. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards North West Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. It is likely to weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm during the next the 24 hours," the IMD said.
