A seven-member committee, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, is poised to endorse the concept of one nation-one election in its forthcoming report to the government.
The report, which is in its final stages, is expected to propose amendments to the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act. These amendments aim to facilitate the synchronisation of Lok Sabha elections with state assembly elections by the year 2029. The recommendations will also include provisions to safeguard against potential disruptions to this synchronisation, such as a hung House, a government's fall following a no-confidence vote, or a government being reduced to a minority due to defections.
The committee's report, once submitted, is anticipated to spark discussions and debates on the feasibility and implications of the one nation-one election concept.
Home Minister Amit Shah and former opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad are among the other members of the panel.
Earlier in February, the high-level committee on 'One Nation, One Election' chaired by Kovind had engaged in discussions with economists regarding a paper co-authored by panel member and former finance commission chairperson N K Singh. The paper, titled "Macroeconomic Impact of Harmonizing Electoral Cycles," was previously presented to the committee.
