Gangopadhyay said he would be joining BJP as it is a national party, which is fighting against the corruption of the TMC in Bengal

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on March 5 and is set to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

"I will be joining the BJP, possibly on March 7. I am joining the BJP as it is a national party, which is fighting against the corruption of the TMC in Bengal," he said, according to news agency PTI.

Gangopadhyay, who announced his decision to quit and join politics two days ago, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu with copies marked to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam, news agency PTI reported citing sources.

He arrived at his chamber in the High Court complex in the morning after which the resignation letter was sent.
