Alongside the Bihar assembly polls verdict, the results for the bypolls in held in eight assembly segments across six states and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir were announced on Friday.
The eight assembly constituencies that went for bypolls are: Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam and Nagrota, Jharkhand's Ghatsila, Mizoram's Dampa, Rajasthan's Anta, Odisha’s Nuapada, and Punjab's Tarn Taran.
Among these, Mizoram's Dampa recorded the highest turnout at 82.3%, followed by Rajasthan's Anta (80.3%), Odisha’s Nuapada (79.4%) and Jammu & Kashmir's Nagrota (75.1%).
Here's how different parties fared across eight seats in six states and one union territory in the bypolls:
Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi defeated the National Conference (NC)'s Aga Syed Mahmood Al-Mosavi by 4,478 votes. Mehdi secured 21,576 votes, while his nearest rival garnered 17,098 votes. A total of 17 rounds of counting were held.
The Budgam bypoll was necessitated after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat and chose his family bastion of Ganderbal after winning from both constituencies in the assembly elections last year.
Jammu and Kashmir's Nagrota
The BJP retained the Nagrota assembly constituency after its 30-year-old candidate Devyani Rana won with a lead of 24,647 votes, carrying forward the legacy of her late father and senior party leader Devender Singh Rana.
Devyani Rana, who has been leading from the beginning, secured 42,350 votes, defeating Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) candidate Harsh Dev Singh, who polled 17,703 votes. National Conference's Shamim Begum finished third with 10,872 votes.
Rana is the daughter of former Nagrota MLA Devender Singh Rana, whose death necessitated the bypoll. He was elected from the constituency in the 2024 assembly elections but died last year.
Mizoram's Dampa
In Mizoram, the main opposition party, Mizo National Front (MNF) retained the Dampa assembly seat in Mamit district, with its candidate R Lalthangliana defeating his nearest rival, Vanlalsailova of the ruling Zoram People's Movement by a margin of 562 votes.
Lalthangliana secured 6,981 votes, which is 40.23 per cent of the total vote share. With 6,419 votes, Vanlalsailova bagged 36.61 per cent of the total polled votes.
The Dampa seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
Punjab's Tarn Taran
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained the Tarn Taran assembly seat in Punjab, with its candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu defeating his nearest rival and Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) nominee Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa by a margin of 12,091 votes.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu secured 42,649 votes against Randhawa's 30,558 after the completion of all 16 rounds of counting.
Independent candidate Mandeep Singh was in the third spot with 19,620 votes, Congress' Karanbir Singh Burj was fourth with 15,078 and BJP's Harjit Singh Sandhu was a distant fifth with 6,239 votes.
The Tarn Taran seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
Rajasthan's Anta
Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya won the Anta assembly bypoll in Rajasthan with 69,571 votes, defeating his nearest rival and BJP nominee Morpal Suman by a margin of 15,612 votes. Suman got 53,959 votes, beating Independent candidate and Congress rebel Naresh Meena, who was initially in second place, by 159 votes in a tantalisingly close contest. Bhaya maintained his lead throughout.
The Anta bypoll was necessitated after BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena was disqualified following his conviction in a criminal case.
Telangana's Jubilee Hills
Congress candidate V Naveen Yadav won the by-election to Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency, defeating his nearest BRS rival Maganti Sunitha by a margin of over 24,000 votes. Yadav secured 98,988 votes, while the BRS nominee got 74,259 votes.
BJP candidate Lankala Deepak Reddy, who managed to get only 17,061 votes, forfeited his security deposit. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year.
Jharkhand's Ghatsila
In Jharkhand’s Ghatsila, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)’s Somesh Chandra Soren won by 38, 524 votes. Soren secured 1,04,794 votes while Babu Lal Soren of the BJP got 66, 270 votes. Somesh Chandra is the son of Ramdas Soren and Babulal Soren is son of former chief minister Champai Soren.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of JMM MLA Ramdas Soren on August 15.
Odisha' Nuapada
BJP candidate Jay Dholakia won the Nuapada assembly bypoll in Odisha by 83, 748 votes on Friday. Dholakia secured 1,23,869 votes, while his nearest rival, Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi managed 40,121 votes.
Snehangini Chhuria of the BJD was in third spot with 38,408 votes..
Jay is the son of the late BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia, whose death necessitated the bypoll.
