After Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was absent at the oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday, the BJP accused the Congress brass of disrespecting a key constitutional occasion.
In a post on X, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took aim at Congress stating that the Leader of the Opposition was “missing yet again" during an important national ceremony.
“No one knows where he is or why he skipped an important constitutional event. Meanwhile, Karnataka is boiling over with the intense infighting between the Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar camps. The Congress high command remains paralysed, unable to take a clear decision. And why? Because everything hinges on “consultations” with Rahul Gandhi, who appears least interested in resolving the crisis, while the people of Karnataka continue to suffer under a government trapped in its own internecine feud,” Malviya said.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also questioned "Rahul Baba’s" reasons for skipping the event, saying that he may have been on a “jungle safari" or “foreign tour".
"Entire Govt led by PM Modi was there but guess who was boycotting or absent Rahul Baba. Perhaps busy with Jungle Safari? Or foreign tour? Sad that Congress boycotted R Day and I Day programs too. They put Khandaan above Sanvidhan," Poonawalla said in a post on X.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Kant at a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The new CJI took the oath in Hindi in the name of God.
Justice Kant was appointed as the next CJI on October 30 and will remain in the post for nearly 15 months. He will demit office on February 9, 2027 on attaining the age of 65 years.
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among the senior leaders who attended the ceremony. Soon after being sworn in, Justice Kant went up to Prime Minister Modi to greet him.
Later, in a post on X, PM Modi shared pictures of the swearing in ceremony.
"Attended the oath taking ceremony of Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Justice of India. Best wishes to him for his tenure ahead," the prime minister wrote.
A customary group photograph was also clicked with President Murmu, Vice President Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Modi, CJI Kant, former CJI Gavai and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal posing for the camera. Former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar was also present and was among those who greeted the new CJI on assuming office.
