Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has begun dumping garbage in front of the residences of habitual litterers.
“Through an innovative awareness initiative titled ‘garbage dumping festival’, waste was deliberately dumped in front of 218 households, and fines amounting to Rs 2.8 lakh were collected,” said Karegowda, BSWML CEO. The waste was later cleared.
While waste is collected daily from every household across all five city corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority by auto-tippers, some residents continue to dump garbage on roadsides, footpaths, and vacant sites, he added.
To curb this behavior and promote civic responsibility, BSWML launched this drive to make offenders experience the nuisance caused by careless waste disposal. Officials said that some residents avoid handing over garbage to auto-tippers and instead dump it late at night in public spaces. To sensitize such individuals, waste was intentionally placed in front of their houses.
BSWML urged citizens to cooperate in maintaining city cleanliness by segregating wet and dry waste and handing it over to auto-tippers during designated collection times.
Awareness on preventing roadside littering
Citizens have been urged not to throw garbage on roadsides or public places. Awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage residents to hand over segregated wet and dry waste directly to auto-tippers during daily collection hours.
65 waste kiosks to be installed across the city
To curb roadside garbage dumping, about 65 waste kiosks will be installed across Bengaluru to promote a Swaccha Bengaluru. One such kiosk has already been inaugurated in the BTM Layout area and has received positive public response.
“Each kiosk will have four bins of 100-litre capacity each, enabling citizens to drop off segregated waste free of charge during specific hours. The kiosks are expected to help eliminate black spots, control foul odours, and improve local sanitation” said Karegowda.
Register complaints via WhatsApp
To facilitate citizen participation in keeping Bengaluru clean, BSWML has set up a dedicated WhatsApp helpline at 9448197197. Residents can send messages or photos of garbage-related issues, and officials will take prompt action to ensure proper waste clearance and resolution.
