A 17-year-old son of a Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) scientist was arrested in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday for allegedly killing his mother over a dispute and painting it as an "accidental fall".
According to the police, the deceased, Aarti Verma, was pushed by her son, a class 11 student, who hit her head on a wall on December 3.
The minor son had been misleading his father, who is based at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, saying that his mother died of a fall.
As per a NDTV report, the incident was revealed after a detailed investigation was conducted. "After two hours of questioning, the teenager admitted that he pushed his mother during an argument, leading to a fatal head injury," the police officer said. "After two hours of questioning, the teenager admitted that he pushed his mother during an argument, leading to a fatal head injury," he added.
The incident came to light on December 7, when Ram Millan, Aarti's husband, had sent his sister-in-law to check on Aarti when her phone was switched off for two days. The house was found to be locked from outside. When Ram returned home, he found his wife lying motionless on the floor.
The police found the 17-year-old outside a temple where he told the officials that her mother died after a fall. He told the police that he locked the house from the outside in panic and wandered aimlessly for four days. However, the post-mortem report did not match the minor boy's statement.
An NDTV report quoting the Superintendent of Police (North) Jitendra Kumar Srivastava said, "During interrogation, the boy confessed on Tuesday evening that on the morning of December 3, his mother asked him to go to school. When he refused, a dispute over money ensued, and his mother threw cash at him in frustration," Srivastava said. "In a fit of rage, he pushed her, causing the fatal injury," he added.
