Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra on Friday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah's “head should be cut off and put on the table”.
While speaking to the media in Nadia district regarding the issue of illegal immigration issue, she said the responsibility of border security lies with the home ministry.
“If infiltration is happening, then Amit Shah's head should be cut off and placed on the table,” she said. Her statements directly blamed the central leadership for the rising concerns over illegal immigration, particularly in border states like West Bengal.
Sharing her comment on X, the Bengal unit of BJP said Moitra's remarks expose "TMC’s frustration". "When Mahua talks of beheading the Home Minister, it exposes TMC’s frustration and the violent culture that is tarnishing Bengal’s image and dragging the state behind," it said.
Moitra said the Prime Minister said from the Red Fort on August 15 that infiltration is happening and because of that, the demography is changing. 'If the Home Minister and the Home Ministry cannot protect the Indian borders and the Prime Minister himself is saying that people are coming from outside and eyeing our mothers and sisters, snatching our lands, then whose fault is this? It is our and your fault. Here is the BSF, we also live in fear of them. Bangladesh is our friend, but because of you, this situation has changed over the past several years," she said as quoted by agencies.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari termed Moitra's remarks "disgusting and disgraceful".
"That line from Mahua Moitra is beyond politics, it is pure hate speech, drenched in venom. Her level has stooped this low under able guidance by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC," he said in a post on X.
Union government data accessed by CNN-News18 showed that exfiltration in the first half of this year stood at 3,536, almost thrice the number from 1,049 in 2024.
Moitra's comments also come after a day after a person used abusive words against PM Modi and his late mother. The man was taking part in the INDIA bloc's ‘vote adhikar’ rally.
The BJP has taken a legal action and an FIR was registered against the person. The BJP also asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders to apologise.
