Omicron India Highlights: India added 1,07,474 new coronavirus cases, taking the total tally of COVID-19 infections to 4,21,88,138, while the active cases further declined to 12,25,011, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.
The death toll climbed to 5,01,979 with 865 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The active cases comprise 2.90 percent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 95.91 percent, the ministry said. A reduction of 1,06,637 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.
India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23 last year.

Gujarat's COVID-19 tally crossed the 12 lakh-mark on Sunday after 3,897 new cases took the number of infections to 12,00,241, a state health department official said. It was also the first time since January 5 that the daily addition of cases had fallen below the 4000-mark, he pointed out.The death of 19 patients, which was the lowest in nearly two weeks, put the toll at 10,667, he said. So far, 11,44,956 people have been discharged post recovery, including 10,273 during the day, leaving the state with an active tally of 44,618, which includes 225 patients on ventilator support.
Daily COVID-19 cases drop below 30,000 in Kerala
Kerala saw a drop in daily coronavirus cases with 26,729 fresh infections being reported on Sunday, taking the total number of those affected by the disease to 62.71 lakh. The COVID toll mounted to 58,255 with 22 additional deaths.The state had recorded 33,538 cases yesterday and 38,684 on Friday. "Currently, there are 3,29,348 active COVID-19 cases in the state out of which only three per cent are admitted to hospitals," the health department said in a release, adding that the state has tested 88,098 samples in the last 24 hours.
Mumbai sees 536 COVID-19 cases, 3 deaths; 82 pc new infections asymptomatic
Mumbai on Sunday reported 536 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally in the metropolis to 10,51,373, while three deaths put the toll at 16,661, a civic official said. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in a statement, informed that 82 per cent of the cases detected during the day were asymptomatic.The civic body's data showed that the number of tests carried out here had reached 1,55,49,418 after 38,082 samples were examined during the day. The discharge of 1,153 people on Sunday took the recovery count to 10,26,144, which is 98 per cent of the caseload, it added.
Mizoram agriculture minister among 1,754 new COVID-19 patients
Mizoram's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,85,227 on Sunday as 1,754 more people, including a minister, tested positive for the infection, while two fresh fatalities pushed the northeastern state's coronavirus death toll to 623, a health official said. Mizoram had reported 1,777 cases and three fatalities on Saturday.State Agriculture Minister C Lalrinsanga tested positive for the infection. He has developed mild symptoms of COVID-19, and is currently under home isolation, the official said. Aizawl district continued to register the highest number of new cases at 1,013, followed by Lunglei (126) and Mamit (132), he said, adding that the fatalities were recorded in Aizawl and Lunglei.
Maharashtra reports 9,666 new cases; 66 die
Maharashtra on Sunday reported 9,666 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the state's infection tally to 78,03,700, while the death of 66 persons took the toll to 1,43,074, the health department said. A total of 25,175 patients were discharged during the day, which raised the recovery count to 75,38,611, it said.There are 1,18,076 active cases in the state now. With 1,44,755 tests conducted during the day, the overall test count rose to 7,55,54,798.No new case of the Omicron variant of the virus was detected in the state on Sunday.
Schools to reopen, night curfew to be lifted in Bihar as COVID situation improves
With the COVID-19 surge showing a significant drop in Bihar, the Nitish Kumar government on Sunday decided to reopen schools, lift night curfew and relax many other restrictions which have been in place for a month. The decision was taken at a meeting of the crisis management group which was chaired by the chief minister.Later, Kumar announced on social media that from Monday onwards, schools will be allowed to hold physical classes with 50 per cent attendance for up to class 8. For classes 9 upwards, there will be no restrictions. According to Chaitanya Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, night curfews, in force since January 6 whereby people were asked to stay indoors from 10 PM to 5 AM, was also being done away with.
West Bengal logs 1,345 new COVID-19 cases, 31 more deaths
West Bengal on Saturday reported 1,345 new COVID-19 cases, 218 less than the previous day, which pushed the tally to 20,05,037, the health department said in its bulletin. Thirty-one more deaths were recorded, raising the toll to 20,789, the bulletin stated.North 24 Parganas logged 223 fresh cases, followed by Kolkata at 159. Eight fatalities were recorded in Kolkata and five in Darjeeling district.
Tamil Nadu inoculated 90.78 percent of population with first dose against COVID-19
Tamil Nadu has inoculated 90.78 percent of people above the age of 18 with the first dose of vaccine against COVID-19 by administering the vaccine to 1,86,785 people. At the 21st mega vaccination camp held in Chennai on Saturday, the State Minister for Medical and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian said as much as 70.02 per cent received the second dose with 5,77,397 people getting the jab. He inspected the vaccination at the Government Omandurar Medical College and Hospital in the city. During the camp, precautionary booster dose was administered to 27,707 people totalling 7,91,889 beneficiaries who included those who received the first and second dose, said a press release.
Schools for Classes 1 to 9 in Gujarat to reopen from Monday
With new coronavirus cases declining, the Gujarat government on Saturday announced the reopening of schools for classes 1 to 9 from February 7. A circular issued by the education department said that considering the COVID-19 situation, government, private and grant-in-aid schools can resume offline education for classes 1 to 9 from Monday.
No large fluctuations in COVID cases expected, Olympics organisers say
A sharp drop in COVID-19 cases on Feb. 5 among Beijing Olympics-related personnel was due to fewer arrivals at the airport and organisers said on Sunday that they did not expect any more large fluctuations in infection numbers.
China detected 10 new COVID cases among Olympic Games-related personnel on Feb. 5, the organising committee of the Games said. That was down from Feb. 4's 45 cases - the second highest daily tally since arrivals commenced last month.
Among the latest cases, four were new airport arrivals, including two athletes or team officials. The remaining six were already in the "closed loop", a bubble keeping Games personnel away from the local population during the Feb. 4-20 Olympics.
Jharkhand logs 449 new COVID-19 cases, 2 fresh fatalities
Jharkhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 4,31,252 on Sunday as 449 more people tested positive for the infection, while two fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 5,310, a health bulletin said. East Singhbhum district, under which industrial city Jamshedpur falls, registered the highest number of new cases at 187, followed by 90 in state capital Ranchi. The fresh fatalities were recorded in Seraikela-Kharsawan and Hazaribag districts.
The state now has 2,787 active cases, while 4,23,155 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 715 in the last 24 hours. The administration has tested 56,625 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, it added.
Kerala records 33,538 new COVID-19 cases, 444 deaths
Kerala continued to witness a dip in the daily COVID-19 infection rate for the third consecutive day, with the state reporting 33,538 new positive cases on Saturday taking the caseload to 62,44,654.
The health department said 46,813 persons recuperated from the disease On February 5, taking the number of recoveries to 58,33,762. "Currently, there are 3,52,399 active COVID-19 cases in the state of which only three per cent of the patients are admitted to hospitals," it said.
Ladakh adds 111 COVID-19 cases

23 COVID deaths, 2,106 cases in Odisha
Odisha recorded 23 more COVID-19 deaths on Sunday, while the infections were the lowest in a month as 2,106 people tested positive, the Health Department said. The daily positivity rate dropped to 3.48 per cent as 60,483 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, a bulletin stated.
Of the 23 COVID-19 deaths, Khurda district reported nine. The state had logged 2,603 COVID-19 cases and 21 deaths on Friday.
Odisha currently has 23,672 active COVID-19 cases, including 5,245 in Khurda, which is in the red zone. Sundargarh and Cuttack are among the four districts that are in the yellow zone with over 1,000 cases. As many as 5,376 patients have recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours. The COVID-19 tally rose to 12,66,811, including 12,34,352 recoveries.
279 new COVID-19 cases registered in Puducherry
Puducherry witnessed a slide in the number of daily COVID-19 cases with 279 fresh infections reported on Sunday taking the total caseload in the Union Territory to 1,64,186. On Saturday, the UT had registered 344 coronavirus cases.There are 4,152 active cases in the UT with 96 patients admitted in hospitals taking treatment while the remaining 4,056 patients are recovering in home isolation.
Andaman & Nicobar records 13 new COVID-19 cases
Andaman and Nicobar Islands logged 13 new COVID-19 cases, three less than the previous day, pushing the total caseload to 9,896, a health department official said on Sunday. Of the 13 new cases, 12 were detected during contact tracing and one during testing at the airport, he said.
The union territory now has 214 active COVID-19 cases, while 9,553 patients have recovered from the disease so far, the official said. The COVID-19 death toll remained unchanged at 129 as no fresh fatality was recorded in the last 24 hours.
Dr. Reddy's files proposal to DCGI to test Sputnik Light as COVID booster dose
Drug major Dr Reddy's Laboratories has submitted a proposal to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to register Sputnik Light vaccine as a booster dose against COVID-19, a top company official has said. The Hyderabad-based drug major had partnered with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to conduct the clinical trials of Sputnik V and distribute the vaccine in India in September 2020.
Last year, the company received permission from the DCGI to import the Sputnik vaccine into India for restricted use in emergency situations in April. "As regards to Sputnik, we are now ready with capacities in India. We are working actively with the Government of India for registering Sputnik Light as a vaccine and as a booster dose of Sputnik V," Dr Reddy's Laboratories CEO Erez Israeli said in an analyst call.
Arunachal Pradesh logs 106 new COVID-19 cases
Arunachal Pradesh recorded 106 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 63,421, a senior health official said on Sunday. Of the fresh cases, 36 were reported from the Capital Complex Region, 16 from Lohit, 11 from Namsai, 9 from Lower Subansiri and 7 from Longding, the official said.
The frontier state currently has 1,800 active COVID-19 cases. As many as 61,330 people have recuperated from the disease so far, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

The testing capacity across the country continues to be expanded. The last 24 hours saw a total of 14,48,513 tests being conducted. India has so far conducted over 74.01 crore (74,01,87,141) cumulative tests.While testing capacity has been enhanced across the country, Weekly Positivity Rate in the country currently stands at 10.20% and the Daily Positivity rate is reported to be 7.42%.

389 new COVID-19 cases in Thane, 4 more deaths
With the addition of 389 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Maharashtra's Thane district has gone up to 7,05,426, while four more fatalities have pushed the death toll to 11,817, an official said on Sunday. These new cases and deaths were reported on Saturday, he said, adding that the COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 1.67 per cent.
In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,62,785, while the death toll has reached 3,386, another official said.
Update on COVID-19 vaccine availability
More than 167.47 crore (1,67,47,07,695) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far through the Union government(free of cost channel) and through direct state procurement category, the Union Health Ministry said in an update on Sunday.More than 11.83 Cr (11,83,06,396) balance and unutilized COVID Vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered.
Over 169 crore COVID vaccine doses administered in India: Govt
The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 169 crore on Saturday, the Union health ministry said. More than 40 lakh vaccine doses were administered till 7 pm on Saturday, it said, adding that the daily vaccination tally is expected to go up with the compilation of the final reports by late night.
More than 1.46 crore (1,46,98,311) precaution doses have been administered to healthcare workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs) and those aged 60 years and above, the ministry said. The countrywide vaccination drive against the viral disease was rolled out on January 16 last year with the HCWs getting inoculated in the first phase. The vaccination of FLWs started from February 2 last year.
14 more deaths, 988 new COVID cases in Punjab
Fourteen more people died of coronavirus in Punjab on Saturday while 988 fresh cases took the infection tally to 7,51,246, according to a medical bulletin. Deaths were reported from several districts, including Amritsar, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar. The state's death toll stands at 17,408.

J&K reports 1,606 new COVID cases, 4 deaths
Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday recorded 1,606 fresh cases of coronavirus, taking the infection tally to 4,45,497 while four deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, officials said. Of the fresh cases, 887 were from the Jammu division and 719 from the Kashmir division, officials said.
Jammu district recorded the highest of 307 cases followed by 259 in Doda district, they said. There are 20,663 active cases while the number of recovered patients is 4,20,128, officials said.
UP reports 3,555 COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths
Uttar Pradesh's COVID-19 case tally climbed to 20,41,734 on Saturday with 3,555 fresh infections being detected in the state, while the death toll mounted to 23,303 as 17 more people succumbed to the disease.
As many as 7,401 more coronavirus patients recuperated from the disease in a span of 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 19,85,926. There are 32,514 active cases of the disease in the state.
So far, over 10 crore samples have been tested for the coronavirus in the state, including more than 1.92 lakh on Friday.
Haryana further eases COVID restrictions
The Haryana government further eased some COVID-19 restrictions in the state on Saturday, allowing all offices including the private ones to function at full capacity while entertainment parks and B2B exhibitions are now allowed to open at 50 percent capacity. "All offices are allowed to function with their full capacity while adopting regular sanitisation and COVID-19 appropriate behavioural norms," according to an order issued by the Haryana State Disaster Management Authority (HSDMA). "
Earlier, only 50 percent of the staff was allowed to physically attend offices. All entertainment parks and B2B exhibitions are allowed to open with 50 percent capacity while following social distancing, ensuring regular sanitisation and Covid-appropriate behaviour, the order said.
