It’s a common complaint in large Indian cities — one simply can’t find a cab anymore. Even if one does, it can be a nightmare.

The complaints include longer wait times, poorer service, and a high number of cancellations. Many times, the driver asks riders to cancel the trip on the ride-hailing app and offers to drop them for the displayed fare.

Once seen as an alternative to owning a vehicle or figuring out a less-than-ideal public transportation system, a door-to-door trip in an AC cab that was timely and affordable seemed like the perfect solution — until it started to fail. Now, it’s a question of looking for rides on multiple apps, asking drivers not to cancel, or having to pay in cash.

Even drivers on cab platforms had a dream run for a few years, with high incentives, low commissions payable to the platforms, and the ability to set their own hours. What slowly started unravelling before the pandemic accelerated has now led to drivers getting disgruntled, with those still in the system trying to find loopholes to get by.
