Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday welcomed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament, stating that the legislation upholds the secular and democratic values of the country.
The bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday and cleared by the Rajya Sabha in the early hours of Friday, seeks to streamline the management of Waqf properties and enhance transparency in their administration.
Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis criticized the previous structure of the Waqf Board under the 1995 Act, claiming it served political interests rather than benefiting the Muslim community.
“Earlier, the Waqf Board was meant for appeasement and did not benefit Muslims. A scam was unearthed during the Congress rule where land was taken away under the garb of it being a Waqf property. This could not be challenged in court,” he said.
Waqf refers to property—both moveable and immovable—that is permanently dedicated by Muslims for religious or charitable purposes. The amended bill aims to ensure better governance of Waqf properties by introducing stricter regulations, improving coordination between Waqf Boards and local authorities, and safeguarding heritage sites. It also seeks to enhance transparency and protect the rights of stakeholders.
