Just before a month of the deadline of US reciprocal tariffs, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said, “We are negotiating to make a nice, fair, equitable and balanced agreement to promote business.”
During a press conference on Tuesday in Bern, Switzerland, Goyal said that the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States presents a valuable opportunity for both nations to enhance and deepen their economic partnership.
“We believe it’s an opportunity for us to expand our bilateral trade and strengthen our partnership,” he told reporters.
He noted that the United States and India are not only strategic partners but also close allies and friends.
The US, he pointed out, is India’s largest bilateral trading partner and home to millions of people of Indian origin.
India and the US share “very, very strong ties, whether in the world of business or geopolitically,” he added.
Goyal is currently in Switzerland on an official visit, holding talks with Swiss political leaders and business representatives to further promote trade and investment between India and Switzerland.
The US has currently suspended the proposed tariffs until July 9, raising hopes that an interim deal could be finalised before that deadline.
