Twenty-eight years ago, Arjuna Ranatunga led the Sri Lankan cricket team to victory in the 1996 World Cup, defeating a formidable Australian side in Lahore. Now, the members of the winning squad have come together to commemorate their achievement with a "world-class" skyscraper near the Sri Lankan Parliament in Colombo, which will be built by the Lankan subsidiary of India's RPP Infra Projects.

The project —96 Legends Square —would be a 42-floor luxury apartment complex, RPP Infra Projects (Lanka) Ltd said in a release.

The project's genesis goes back to 1996 when the Sri Lankan government, led by the-then president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, awarded each team member ten perches of land (around 25.29 square metres) in honour of their victory. Now, 12 of the 14 team members have joined as brand ambassadors to build the residential and commercial project.

The structure will be crowned with a cricket ball-shaped feature, symbolising the team's achievements. Each tower floor will be named after a team member, starting with the captain Ranatunga and vice-captain Aravinda de Silva. Each cricketer will own a luxurious four-bedroom apartment, while cricket enthusiasts will have the unique opportunity to live on the same floor as their favourite legend, the company said.
