If you haven’t been filing your income tax returns in the past, get ready to be charged a higher Tax Deducted at Source (TDS). The new TDS rate for those who don’t file their IT returns is double the regular rates. On June 21, the new income-tax portal launched a new facility to make it easier for those who deduct TDS to check if you have filed your IT returns. Alternatively, by now, you would have received letters and emails asking you to declare whether you have filed income tax returns for the past two years. However, since the deadline to file IT returns this year has been pushed back to September 30, 2021, some confusion prevailed on the TDS matter.

Penalising non-filers of IT returns

Before payments are made, a portion is deducted as tax upfront. This is done to make sure the transactions are reported to the income tax department.
