The month of October in India this year is packed with celebrations like Dussehra, Diwali, Durga Puja, Chhath Puja, and more. While families across the country gear up for puja rituals, shopping, and travel, it’s equally important to remember that banks too take a holiday during these occasions. If you’re planning cash withdrawals, locker visits, or other in-branch services, here’s a state-wise look at when banks will remain closed.
Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti closures
The month kicks off with major holidays. On October 1, banks in states like Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, and several others will remain closed for Dussehra, Ayudha Pooja, and Durga Puja. The very next day, October 2, is Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, when all banks across India will be shut.
Durga Puja season in the east
For people in West Bengal, Sikkim, Tripura, and Odisha, the early part of October will see multiple bank closures due to Durga Puja festivities. Between October 1 and 4, branches in these states will remain closed on different days, aligning with local customs. For residents here, it means adjusting their bank visits well in advance.
Lakshmi Puja and Valmiki Jayanti
Mid-October brings closures tied to regional celebrations. On October 6, banks in Tripura and West Bengal will remain closed for Lakshmi Puja. The following day, October 7, banks in Karnataka, Odisha, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh will shut for Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima.
Karva Chauth, Kati Bihu, and beyond
While Karva Chauth on October 10 will affect banking in Himachal Pradesh, people in Assam will see closures on October 18 for Kati Bihu.
Diwali week
As always, Diwali brings the longest list of bank closures across states. On October 20, banks in nearly 20 states—including Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal—will be closed for Diwali, Naraka Chaturdashi, and Kali Puja. The following days, October 21 and 22, will see closures in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and several others for Laxmi Puja, Govardhan Pooja, and Balipadyami.
Finally, October 23 marks Bhaidooj and Chitragupt Jayanti, when banks in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, among others, will remain shut.
Chhath Puja in Bihar and Jharkhand
For people in Bihar and Jharkhand, the last week of October is key. Banks will remain closed on October 27 and 28 for the evening and morning rituals of Chhath Puja.
Patel Jayanti
On October 31, Gujarati banks will be closed in observance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary, marking the end of the month.
It is worth noting that digital banking, UPI, and mobile apps will provide uninterrupted access to fund transfers and bill payments. However, those needing physical services like cheque clearance, demand drafts, or locker visits must plan around these holidays.
