From November 2025, Aadhaar card holders will have more autonomy to modify more details online by themselves, without needing a trip to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The move is a part of the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) latest initiative to further simplify Aadhaar services, especially for people who face mobility or logistical challenges.
What details can be modified online
Presently, Aadhaar card holders are able to update demographics such as name (minor changes), address, gender, and date of birth (up to permissible ranges) online through the myAadhaar portal. UIDAI will extend the self-update facility to additional fields from November.
The below changes will be allowed online, according to officials dealing with the case:
- Change of name (spelling errors and contraction to full name, on verification of documents)
- Date of birth update (with limitations)
- Family member information (name of father or spouse)
- Document-based or consent-based address update with another resident's Aadhaar
Besides the existing facility of mobile number and email address update at enrolment centres, available now, that can be rolled out phased in the next year with the addition of a digital option.
How the process will work
The process will be carried out through login on the myAadhaar portal using a one-time password (OTP) on the enrolled mobile. After authentication, the documents will be uploaded and the update process started.
Each update will be validated against UIDAI’s backend systems to ensure authenticity. In some cases, users may be required to complete a video-based verification step, especially for high-impact updates like name or date of birth.
The changes, once approved, will be reflected in the digital Aadhaar copy, which can be downloaded from the portal. UIDAI officials say most requests will be processed within 3-5 working days.
Why UIDAI is expanding online services
UIDAI’s decision comes amid growing demand for convenient digital identity management, especially after the pandemic accelerated the shift to online public services. Over 140 crore Aadhaar numbers have been issued so far, and millions of Indians rely on Aadhaar for accessing government benefits, banking, and mobile services.
As online services expand, UIDAI hopes to reduce traffic at Aadhaar centres and also improve the user experience. It also makes residents in remote or underserved regions capable of updating their information without having to travel. Key points to remember
While the facility for online updates brings convenience, users must make sure that documents uploaded are legible, authentic, and in conformity with the intended update. Falsified information or fake documents will get rejected or even lead to the Aadhaar number being suspended.
Biometric changes—such as fingerprint, iris scan or photograph—would still entail physically visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra since these require physical authentication.
UIDAI will come up with detailed guidelines and a revised list of admissible documents closer to the November launch.
