The automotive industry wrapped up March as well as the financial year with a mixed performance across segments, and while Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Bajaj Auto, and TVS Motor Company posted impressive growth, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki faced headwinds in certain categories.
Here’s a closer look at how leading automakers fared.
Tata Motors: Sales Slide in Q4, PV Segment Under Pressure
Largest automotive manufacturer Tata Motors reported a total sales of 2.53 lakh units in Q4FY25, down from 2.65 lakh units a year ago, with the passenger vehicle (PV) segment growth falling by 6 percent on-year, at 1.47 lakh units, while commercial vehicle (CV) sales dropped 3 percent to 1.05 lakh units.
Despite the overall decline, Tata Motors' domestic sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MH&ICV) in March rose to 20,474 units, marginally higher compared to a year ago. Including exports, MH&ICV sales stood at 21,226 units for the month, marking a steady improvement.
Mahindra & Mahindra: SUV and Tractor Sales Surge
M&M delivered another strong month, with total auto sales surging 23 percent on-year to 83,894 units in March. The SUV segment continued its growth streak, registering 48,048 units, up 18 percent from last year.
For the full fiscal year, M&M registered 5.51 lakh SUV sales - its highest-ever - reflecting a 20 percent on-year rise. The company's tractor division also saw robust demand, with March sales rising 34 percent to 34,934 units, higher than market estimates.
Maruti Suzuki: Modest Growth as Domestic PV Sales Decline
Maruti Suzuki's total sales in March inched up 3.09 percent on-year to 1.93 lakh units, but domestic passenger vehicle sales slipped 1.29 percent to 1.51 lakh units, compared to 1.53 lakh units in the same month a year ago, down 2 percent.
Sales of mini cars comprising Alto and S-Presso were lower at 11,655 units last month as compared to 11,829 units in the year-ago period.
Royal Enfield (Eicher Motors): A Record Year
Eicher Motors, the maker of Royal Enfield, recorded a sale of 1.01 lakh motorcycles in March, marking a 34 percent on-year rise. The company also crossed the one-million annual sales milestone for the first time, which Managing Director B Govindarajan described as a turning point in Royal Enfield’s evolution from niche player to a global leader in its category.
TVS Motor Company: Highest-Ever Sales in FY25
TVS Motor wrapped up the financial year on a high note, reporting a sale of 47.4 lakh units, 13 percent higher compared to FY24. March sales alone surged 17 percent on-year to 4.15 lakh units, driven by a strong domestic demand and a 23 percent rise in exports.
