The market continued to trade on a negative note on Friday afternoon, with the Nifty trading 64 points down at 10,618, and the Sensex trading 220 points lower at 34,928.
The Nifty Midcap index extended its loses and was down 1.7 percent, weighed down by stocks like Allahabad Bank, GMR Infrastructure, India Cements, Strides Shasun, TVS Motor Company, Just Dial, Power Finance Corporation, Voltas, Jain Irrigation Systems, CG Power, Reliance Power, Strides Shasun and Jaiprakash Associates, among others.
The BSE Midcap index was also down over 1 percent, dragged down by GMR Infrastructure, Adani Power, Wockhardt, Vakrangee and Reliance Power.
FMCG stocks outperformed the broader indices led by Colgate Palmolive, which jumped 3.5 percent, followed by Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Jubilant Foodworks and Britannia Industries, among others.
The CNX Realty index was also trading weak led by Godrej Properties, which shed over 3 percent, while DLF was down 1 percent. Sobha, Unitech, Indiabulls Real Estate and Oberoi Realty were the other losers.
The Bank Nifty was lower by half a percent, as stocks like ICICI Bank shed over 3 percent and HDFC Bank was down 0.5 percent. Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and State Bank of India were the other losers.
Pharma stocks also traded in the red with stocks like Sun Pharmaceutical Industries down 2 percent, and Cipla, Glenmark Pharma, Cadila Healthcare and Aurobindo Pharma declining.
The top gainers among Nifty constituents were Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Tech Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
The most actively traded stocks on the NSE were Bajaj Finance, up over 4 percent, and Reliance Communications, which plunged over 10 percent. Voltas, Tata Steel and Bharti Airtel were the other actively traded stocks.
Some of the top gainers on BSE were Time Technoplast, Videocon Industries, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Colgate Palmolive.
The top losers on BSE were Strides Shasun, which tanked over 20 percent, SRF, Tata Steel, Granules India and Reliance Naval and Engineering.
Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Britannia Industries, Colgate Palmolive, Edelweiss Financial Services, Hindustan Unilever and Mphasis were some of the stocks that hit fresh 52-week highs in afternoon trade.
On the other hand, 144 stocks hit a new 52-week low. These include ABB, ACC, Amtek Auto, Bank of Baroda, Bharti Airtel, Ceat, PTC India, Strides Shasun and Vakrangee, among others.
The breadth of the market favoured declines, with 503 stocks advancing, 1215 declining and 329 remaining unchanged. On BSE, 787 stocks advanced, 1768 declined and 135 remained unchanged.
