India on February 12 launched Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Mauritius also got RuPay card services.
Indian nationals have conducted first UPI transaction in Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
“Today is very special day for three ocean nations. Fintech connectivity will not only strengthen cross border transactions, but also connections,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during the launch event.
The Prime Minister underlined that digital public infrastructure has brought about a revolutionary change in India, where the smallest of vendors in the remotest of villages are transacting via UPI and making digital payments, release said.
Speaking about the convenience and speed of UPI transactions, the Prime Minister informed that more than 100 billion transactions took place via UPI last year worth Rs 2 lakh crores or 8 trillion Sri Lankan rupees or 1 trillion Mauritius rupees, release added.
The Prime Minister also mentioned making last-mile delivery through the GEM Trinity of bank accounts, Aadhar and mobile phones where Rs 34 lakh crores or 400 billion US dollars has been transferred into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, release said.
On February 2, India formally launched UPI at the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The NPCI said in a statement that its arm NPCI International Payments (NIPL) has tied up with French e-commerce and proximity payments Lyra, which will help ensure that the UPI payment mechanism is accepted in the European country, starting with the Eiffel Tower. At present, Indian tourists rank as the second largest group of international visitors to the Eiffel Tower, it said.
