A family had a narrow escape after their car fell into an 11-foot-deep pit in Saharanpur area of Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday. Media reports said that the pit was dug by a municipal contractor.
Virendra, who is a resident of Jukhedi village, was driving his car at around 1 am on Wednesday, taking his ailing mother to Gangoh for medical treatment. His wife, children and brother were also in the car with him.
Reports said that the family members were able to evade the tragedy and escape the vehicle without any major injuries. India Today reported that local residents present near the accident site pulled the family out of the pit and then helped them take the ailing mother to the hospital.
India Today further reported that the pit that the car fell into had been dug by a municipal contractor in the middle of the work for boring purposes. However, the pit was completely unmarked and had no warning signs or barricades to avoid tragedies.
The locals, angry over the incident, expressed their disappointment over the civil negligence and said that a major tragedy was averted. Later in the morning, a bulldozer crane was called to retrieve the car from the pit.
Local residents have demanded that strict action be taken against the contractor who dug the pit.
