The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is actively working to reduce time lags in survey releases, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Rao Inderjit Singh said on February 7, during an event celebrating 75 years of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).
Highlighting the ministry’s ongoing efforts, Singh announced that the government will soon introduce new surveys on health, telecommunications, and tourism.
“Social consumption on health survey is capturing essential data on healthcare access and expenditures,” Singh noted.
Additionally, the ministry is conducting modular surveys to track the growth and penetration of the telecom sector.
“We aim to leverage big data, machine learning to foster transparency and inclusivity,” he added.
Among the upcoming initiatives, the government will also launch a domestic tourism survey and a national household travel survey.
Data-Driven Policy Decisions
Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI, emphasized the critical role of NSS surveys in data-based policymaking. He pointed out that insights from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey played a key role in government interventions to stabilize fruit and vegetable prices.
Furthermore, last year’s Union Budget leveraged data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey to assess the need for working women’s hostels and childcare facilities.
