The Finance Ministry's bid to rein in the fiscal deficit has just got a bit tougher. Today, the Rural Development Ministry has expanded the scope of its flagship National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. The list of permissible work under NREGA now includes seven new categories.

Rural development minister Jairam Ramesh said that the government is duty-bound to fulfill and fund the requirements for the scheme.
“Some other demand will go down, some other demand will go up. Will demand go beyond the labour budget? It could well. How do I know? It has to come from the states. If the demand goes up, demand goes up it can't be helped,” said Ramesh.
